Specialty Contact Lenses

Have you been told that you “can’t wear contact lenses” or attempted contact lenses in the past but discontinued wear due to poor comfort or vision?

You may be a candidate for a specialty lens known as Scleral Contact Lenses.

Watch Dr. Shirley Talk About Specialty Hard Contact Lenses

image0 (7)Scleral contact lenses are hard contact lenses (rigid gas permeable) with an extra-wide diameter. As opposed to traditional contacts, scleral lenses vault over the entire cornea, leaving a fluid-filled gap between the lens and the corneal surface before coming to rest on the white part of your eye (also known as the sclera). Scleral lenses are customized to your eye for individuals with hard-to-fit eyes, high astigmatism, keratoconus, and severe dry eye. Despite their larger diameter, scleral lenses tend to be very comfortable and provide clear, consistent vision throughout the day.

Patients with the following diagnoses, tend to be good candidates for scleral contact lenses:

  • Keratoconus
  • Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
  • Post Corneal Transplant Surgery
  • Severe Dry Eye
  • Large amounts of Astigmatism
  • Corneal Scars (trauma, infection)
  • Discomfort with current contacts

Dr. Shirley specializes in the fitting of specialty contact lenses including Scleral Contact Lenses. Call our office today to schedule a contact lens consultation!

image0(4)Meet Tiffany.

Tiffany was referred to our office over a year ago for a debilitating eye condition that left her nearly blind and in fear of major eye surgery. In 2019, after 6 years of constant worrying about the worst case scenario, Tiffany saw an ophthalmologist in Pittsburgh who gave her an alternative option to surgery…and that option was to see Dr. Shirley for a medically necessary contact fitting.

After a few appointments with Dr. Shirley and a new specialty contact lens, Tiffany was able to see again! She hadn’t driven at night in over 6 years but shortly after she received this lens, she regained that freedom (with a few tears in her eyes).

When I asked Tiffany what she would like to say about her experience with Dr. Shirley, she said this: “Dr. Shirley gave me my life back. He is amazing.” <3
